Coumarin powder has a sweet, warm odour often described as hay, tonka bean, vanilla and faint almond. It is a dry, powdery note rather than a liquid, and is used as a building block in many fougere, oriental and gourmand style compositions.
It is used in perfume and attar blending, soap making and candle fragrance work, often paired with vanillin, musks or woody materials to round out a base. It also appears in tobacco and amber style accords.
Dissolve the powder in alcohol or a suitable solvent before blending into a perfume concentrate, or melt it into wax or oil base for candles and soap. Mix gradually and test the blend on a small scale before scaling up.
